HMS Limbourne · Survivor

Walter John Phipps

Acting Commander

Limbourne’s commanding officer was wounded and concussed in the attack. His subsequent command record gives a glimpse of his continuing naval service.

A life within the history

A new command, a continuing career.

Phipps had commanded Woolston and Montrose before taking command of Limbourne on 20 October 1943. Three days later, the torpedo explosion wounded and concussed him, leaving a junior officer to take charge. He survived.

The published command register later places him in command of Mackay from December 1944 into 1945. That later appointment does not establish how quickly he recovered from his injuries.
