HMS Limbourne · Survivor

James R. McCarthy

First Lieutenant

One of eight American soldiers temporarily aboard Limbourne, McCarthy survived the attack with head injuries.

A life within the history

An American visitor on the bridge.

First Lieutenant McCarthy joined Limbourne with seven other soldiers from the US Army’s 110th Field Artillery Battalion, 29th Division. The published Wensleydale history says the party reported to Plymouth on 6 October and McCarthy was assigned to the bridge.

He survived with head injuries. The account says the American survivors were examined at the 115th Station Hospital at Tavistock and McCarthy was not immediately returned to his unit. These details have not yet been checked against his individual service or hospital records.
