Cunliffe-Owen

Sub-Lieutenant

After senior officers were incapacitated, a sub-lieutenant took charge of the damaged Limbourne and carried her situation to another ship.

A life within the history

Carrying the message by boat.

With Phipps and the first lieutenant concussed, Cunliffe-Owen took charge of the damaged ship. Signalling equipment had been lost. He went by motor boat to Talybont to explain the situation, and preparations followed to tow Limbourne stern first.

The accompanying ship report describes the time needed to free wounded men trapped in the Wireless Office and forward superstructure. His surname and rank are recorded; given names and initials remain unverified.
